ZANU PF DOOMED AFTER MUGABE GOES - ENOS NKALA

...................

ZANU PF founder and ex-cabinet minister Enos Nkala has said the the party he helped form may not survive beyond President Robert Mugabe, adding its chance of continuing relevance lay with defence minister Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Newsday reported on Thursday that Nkala, one of the founding fathers of Zanu PF, said that the party was already faced with internal squabbles which were damaging to its future.

"Zanu PF is already fragmented, I am not sure if it will survive if Mugabe leaves, these factions will grow beyond what our present politics may take," he said.

"Zanu PF is an old party, it has made many mistakes during the time it has been in power, and maybe that is what may cause its defeat in the next elections."

Mugabe, who turned 89 this year, is set to lead his party into fresh elections this year.
Although he has vowed to fight on, speculation over his succession continues, with the party said to be torn between factions loyal to his deputy, Joice Mujuru and Mnangagwa.

Recent media reports have tipped Mujuru to succeed the ageing leader, citing her seniority in terms of party hierarchy.

But Nkala said Zanu PF would, likely, fare better under Mnangagwa.

“I think Mnangagwa,” Nkala said when asked who he thought would best choice of successor.

“Well he knew what he was doing, he had a programme for his own leadership and I think if he were given the opportunity to put that programme into operation, he would have done very well.”

He said the fact Mnangagwa may not be openly angling for the position did not mean he was not interested.

“Like anybody else, people have ambitions, they maybe hidden, but they have ambitions; if you dig into them you will find that they have ambitions, they maybe loose or solid ambitions.”

Nkala said Zanu PF was more likely to lose to the MDC-T if Mugabe did not stand in the upcoming election.
"You know Mugabe is a good speaker and commands a lot of respect, if he leaves and someone takes over I do not know who that is, maybe Joice Mujuru, she may not be able to command the respect that Mugabe enjoys."

Zimbabwe is due to hold fresh elections later this year to end the unity administration formed in 2009 following disputed 2008 elections.

Nkala expressed concern over the post-election period in the event Mugabe fails to win, citing the influence of security services generals.

“I am not sure what would happen if Mugabe left because the generals have a lot of influence and some of them date back to the days of the liberation struggle,” he said.
