Who are Manchester United’s biggest transfer targets this summer?
Manchester
United have undergone a major change in regime this summer with David
Moyes arriving as boss from Everton to replace United legend Sir Alex
Ferguson, who retired at the end of the season.
Moyes
must feel like a kid in a candy store. He has gone from hardly having
anything to spend at Everton to having a very healthy transfer budget at United.
With
a substantial budget reported to be available. Here is a list of the
players that have been linked with a move to United this summer:
Marouane Fellaini (Everton)
Even
before Moyes arrived at Old Trafford, the big Belgium midfielder was
linked with a big money move to United. The 25-year-old enjoyed a
stellar campaign scoring 11 goals from an attacking midfielder position.
Fellaini
has stated on a number of occasions that he wants to play in the
Champions League and has a release clause of £22.5million in his
contract. Arsenal and Chelsea are also reportedly interested in signing
the former-Standard Liege star.
Leighton Baines (Everton)
Baines
is another Toffee’s player that has long been linked with a move to
United. Moyes move to Old Trafford has only intensified speculation that
the England international is set to move to Old Trafford this summer.
United
already has Patrice Evra and Alexander Buttner as left-back options,
but it appears that Moyes wants to expand those options.
Luke Shaw (Southampton)
Shaw
is seen as a younger option than Baines. In fact, at just 17-years-old
the full-back is 11 years younger than Baines. Shaw is highly-rated
after breaking into the Saints first team over the last year or so.
The
teenager is rated in the £15million bracket and Chelsea are also
reported to be interested in signing him. The hefty price tag may mean
that Shaw stays on the South Coast for another season though.
Thiago Alcantara (Barcelona)
According
to a number of English newspapers United are set to launch a £15million
bid for the talented young Barca playmaker. Thiago is one of the best
up-and-coming central midfielders in the game, but has found first team
opportunities hard to come by at the Nou Camp.
Moyes
is looking to strengthen his central midfield, with Paul Scholes
retiring and a perceived lack of options in the centre of the park.
Thiago is also wanted by United’s arch-rivals Manchester City and
Spanish giants Real Madrid.
The youngster would
no doubt provide the Manchester United midfield with a bit of flair and
vision. However, he must cut out the showboating if he is going to
fulfil his potential as a top player.
Robert Lewandowski (Dortmund)
The
highly-rated Polish international striker was expected to join
Dortmund’s arch-rivals Bayern Munich this summer. However, BVB have
stated that Lewandowski will not join Bayern this summer. Lewandowski’s
contract with Dortmund expires next summer, so he will be a free agent.
It
is difficult to see Dortmund allowing the player to leave next summer
on a free transfer and the club losing £20-30million in a transfer fee.
United could still nip in with a bid this summer to steal the striker
away.
With doubts over the future of Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford, United could be in need of another striking option next season.
Unlikely
One
player that looks unlikely to be heading to United this summer is
Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas. The former-Arsenal captain had been
linked with a move to Old Trafford, but has recently stated that he will
only move if Barcelona want to sell him.
The
Spanish champions have given no indication that they want the
26-year-old to leave, so Moyes and United may need to look for an
alternative option.
Strong
This
summer David Moyes will no doubt strengthen his squad and the Red
Devils will be even stronger next season. Whoever joins the Red Devils
this summer, next season promises to be a very interesting one at Old
Trafford with Moyes at the helm.
Which players will Manchester United sign this summer?
