Gareth Bale or Memphis Depay? Louis van Gaal facing Man United transfer dilemma in the summer
The PSV Eindhoven winger and the former Spurs man have been tipped as potential recruits, but United will not sign both
Manager Louis van Gaal must decide which goalscoring winger he wants to inject much-needed pace into his attack.
With British record signing Angel di Maria already at at the club and Ashley Young proving one of the surprise packages of the season, it is difficult to see how both Bale and Depay would fit into Van Gaal’s plans.
Factors such as price and availability will come into the equation. But the final decision could go a long way to indicating how much influence Van Gaal holds at Old Trafford after a year in charge.
The Dutchman will not be handed players he does not want - but that won’t be the case when a final decision is made on two of United’s key targets this summer.
Either one will add a new dimension to United’s attack - providing more pace to Van Gaal’s preferred 4-3-3 formation.
But given his links to Depay, it is easy to draw the conclusion that he would like to be reunited with the 21-year-old, who he included in Holland’s World Cup squad last summer.
The PSV Eindhoven star fits the profile of a Van Gaal player. Young, adaptable and hungry. At the cost of around £25m he would also represent a much cheaper alternative to Bale.
However, the opportunity to sign the world’s most expensive player from Real Madrid is an enticing one for United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward.
Alerted to his potential availability this summer, Woodward would be extremely tempted to have another go.
He is the man for the grand gesture - as proved by the £59.7m signing of Di Maria last summer and his desire to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.
Woodward is determined to emphasise United’s enduring status as one of the biggest club’s in world football.
And the coup of landing Bale would make a huge statement to investors on the New York Stock Exchange as well as their rivals on the pitch.
With £150m to spend this summer, Van Gaal has the funds to move for Bale.
But with a top-class defender in the guise of Mats Hummels and a midfield enforcer like Kevin Strootman also on his wanted list - a relatively cut price Depay may appeal to him more.
