Belgium reached their highest ever FIFA ranking in May
The new FIFA World Rankings saw Belgium leapfrog Argentina into second place while Germany retained their top spot. This is Belgium’s highest ever ranking since the system was launched and they are now on 1509 points – but a long way behind Germany’s 1775 points. France also made it into the top 10 with Switzerland dropping to 11th spot. The rest of the top 20 teams did not play matches in May.
World Cup finalists Argentina are third (1496 points) with Colombia fourth (1435 points). Brazil made it three South American countries in the top five (1392 points). Netherlands, Portugal, Uruguay, France and Spain round off the top 10 countries in world football. Other European giants like Italy, England and Croatia are 13th, 15th and 18th respectively.
Madagascar saw the biggest jump in the rankings as they moved up 37 spots to 113. In all, May saw 44 international matches being played with a majority of them being held in Africa. Other countries which reached their highest position ever in the rankings were Democratic Republic of the Congo (#47), Timor-Leste (#146) and Bhutan (#159).
India moved up six spots to 141. They are now on 161 points, a few decimal points behind Central African Republic.
